Increasing numbers of women now remove all pubic hair or have much more exaggerated bikini lines than ever before.
This is, of course a personal preference and your gynaecologist is in no way concerned I can assure you! For the most part, from what I've seen in the clinic, many woman under the age of 50 shows signs of hair removal whereas older women more often prefer to go au naturel. I've also seen dyed or bleached pubic hair on a number of occasions. But, despite the media attention they've received in recent years, in my whole career I have only seen one vajazzle. Many women seem very apologetic when they haven't presented silky smooth pins, but rest assured: a 2 hour visit to the beauticians is definitely not required before your clinic visit.
The removal of pubic hair makes the labia minora the 'flaps' of skin on either side of the vagina that much more visible, and can make them appear more prominent. Images of labia are now very commonplace and the accessibility of online pornography has made women more aware of their vulva than ever. Many worry they don't look 'normal' down there. But remember that women and men come in all different shapes and sizes, and that the performers in pornography may not always be representative of normality in either gender.
Cosmetic vaginal surgery to trim or enhance the labia labiaplasty is now more frequently requested than ever. Most gynecologists, myself included think very carefully in conjunction with the patient, as it is often not necessary to alter what is perfectly normal tissue.
Although it is a relatively simple procedure, it is not without risk. It mostly requires a general anaesthetic and some recovery time. I doubt I was the first or last patient that doctor made that specific comment or a similar one to, and I find that unnerving. I also doubt, as evidenced by the experiences above, that she's the only doctor doing this, too. I just hope one of those patients—instead of being shocked and dumbfounded, like me—is able to articulate a response conveying to their doctor that the best thing women can do for each other is to support their choices, even if you're not personally on board with those choices.
And, of course, arm them with all the important information they need to make those choices well. In a way, that'll get us one step closer to a positive change in society—a change that might finally make people realize that they have no right to tell a woman what she should or shouldn't do with her body.
