Who is bagger vance in movie

He runs away from the life he once knew, including the game of golf and his rich, beautiful girlfriend, played by Charlize Theron Reindeer Games. Junnah gets thrown back into the limelight when he agrees to play a golf tournament in his hometown of Savannah, Ga.

In a very peculiar twist of fate, he hires Bagger Vance as his caddy. Vance, played by Will Smith Wild Wild West , not only helps Junnah with his golf game, but teaches him that every man must put the past behind him.

One of the best aspects of the film is that it never takes itself too seriously. The plot is broken up nicely with lighthearted humor to keep it from becoming overly dramatic. The interaction between Damon and Smith adds much-needed laughs to the film. Bagger Vance is a different kind of caddy, often letting Junnah learn from his own mistakes but being sure to make wisecracks about them.

He is easily the most entertaining actor in the film. By opting to have your ticket verified for this movie, you are allowing us to check the email address associated with your Rotten Tomatoes account against an email address associated with a Fandango ticket purchase for the same movie.

But, after careful consideration, Redford decided that the movie would work better with younger men playing Bagger Vance and Rannulph Junuh.

Goofs Having the best score on the 17th, Junuh should have teed-off first on the 18th tee, not last. Quotes Rannulph Junnah : Now, the question on the table is how drunk is drunk enough? Crazy credits The DreamWorks logo, the 20th Century Fox logo, and the opening credits are all silent when the film opens, except for the sound of the wind and crickets of the golf course.

Soundtracks Tres Jolie Op. User reviews Review. Top review. The great game of golf. I really did feel like I was back in that time watching this story about a match between the greatest golfers of their era, Bobby Jones and Walter Hagen.

A match where a local man, Matt Damon gave the greats a run for their money. Harve Presnell one of Savannah's leading citizens has invested everything in the development of a new golf course and when stock market crashed he loses everything and takes his own life.

Staving off her father's creditors Charlize Theron vows that this course will open and will feature a match between the two best of their time Bobby Jones and Walter Hagen. However for a little local rooting interest the townsfolk insist on a local player in with the big guys.

Said local player is Matt Damon who went to war in and came out bitter, disillusioned and drunk. Back in the day people in Savannah thought Damon might have a future in professional golf then really at its beginning. But he hasn't swung a club in a decade. This entire story is seen through the eyes of young J. And she also persuades Rannulph Junuh Matt Damon , who was the greatest player in Savannah until he went off to World War I and something broke inside. He spent the s drinking and playing poker.

Junuh doesn't much want to return to golf, which for him also means returning to civilization and to his own better nature. Three people encourage him. One is Adele. Before the war they were in love. One is a boy named Hardy J. Michael Moncrief who dreams about golf. And one is Bagger Vance Will Smith , a caddy who appears out of nowhere and assigns himself to the rehabilitation and education of Rannulph Junuh.

We have here the elements for a cruder movie. We can imagine how Jones and Hagen could be painted as hard-edged professionals, how the caddy could be sketched with broad strokes like some kind of an angel in a sitcom, how the little kid could be made insufferable and cute, how Adele and Junuh could fight and make up and fight, all according to the outlines they hand out in screenwriting class.

That's not how this movie goes. Nothing in it is pushed too far; it is a masterpiece of tact. Not even the outcome of the tournament is pumped up for effect; quietly, the movie suggests that how the tournament is won is more important than who wins it. As for the romance, it's in a minor key good for regret and tremulous hope; Charlize Theron's wise, sweet Adele handles Junuh like a man she wants to teach about tenderness.

Every actor makes the point, and then pauses, content. Matt Damon's Junuh is not a comeback hero but a man who seems surprised to be playing golf. Jones and Hagen are not the good cop and the bad cop.
