Due to what appeared to be a mistake in his employment contract, he becomes assigned to work on shoujo manga, which disappoints him since he had never done anything other than literature and had no interest in shoujo manga.
He is also upset because he knows very little about editing manga. He pleads with General Affairs to try to re-assign him to the literature department to no avail. After meeting his boss, Takano Masamune, he wants to tell Masamune that he wants to quit due to little knowledge in such a department and field work. However, he decides to continue with manga and give it his best after being called 'useless' in the job by Masamune, much to his anger.
Ritsu later finds out that his father had him placed in the shoujo manga department instead of literature during his transfer to the company, deliberately having him switched for unknown reasons. This leaves him confused as to why he would do that. Ritsu later decides to stay and work with shoujo manga so he can gain success and prove to others that he is not riding on his parents' coattails and can be a great manga editor based on his own personal skills and hard work.
Ritsu usually tells himself that he will quit working at Marukawa as many of the workers like to pick on him for being a "newbie" or that he frequently butts heads with Takano. Masamune is Ritsu's current boss, neighbor and first love in high school.
In the manga, Masamune and Ritsu have been neighbors for at least a year. However, they had never met or ran into each other due to irregular times leaving and arriving back home while Ritsu was still working at his father's company.
In the anime, when Ritsu moves into his new apartment because he wished to start completely fresh in life alongside his new job, he finds out that Masamune is his neighbor. Ten years passed and Ritsu ends up working at Marukawa Publishing's Emerald department where Masamune is his boss. Neither of them realize who the other is because, due to his parent's divorce, Takano's last name had been changed and Ritsu had been using his actual name which Takano didn't know.
Also, since ten years had passed, two naturally looked different than they had in high school. Takano had changed his hairstyle, and the previously shy Ritsu had a more confident, combative demeanor. After finding out that his new boss is his former lover, he adamantly assures Takano that he will never have such feelings for him again, although Takano vows that he will make him fall in love with him again.
While Takano clearly still has feelings for Ritsu and openly refuses to give up on him, Ritsu often betrays his deeper feelings of love for Takano through constantly denying them.
After a few words with Takano while waiting for the rain to lighten up, Takano says that he had tried to find him when they were in high school. Ritsu was touched by the admission, although he was still embarrassed about how he had given a false name to his first love in high school. This makes Takano mad that, for 10 years, he didn't even know Ritsu's real name. Though Takano and Ritsu get into many arguments about the past and work situations, usually because Ritsu won't hesitate to talk back to him, Takano deeply cares for Ritsu and is desperate not to lose him again. In one manga chapter, Takano asks if Ritsu is going to take over his family company then if that means he will move away.
When Ritsu gives a vague answer, Takano declares that if he is going to move again, he will not let him go and implies that he will follow him. He goes on saying that he will not be able to handle losing Ritsu a second time as the first time was painful enough - admitting how never seeing him again is his worst fear. He also often implies that Ritsu is his one true love, often telling Ritsu that "it has to be him" in terms of his love life.
Also, he has made it very clear that he is not hung up on the past and that the person whom he truly loves now is the "present [Ritsu]". Takano usually uses "Ritsu" only when they are alone together or when he is trying to have a serious discussion. Most of the time, he calls him by his last name or "Newbie" while they are working. While aware of the fact that Ritsu is extremely uncomfortable about his status as the only heir to his father's company, Takano doesn't hesitate to tease Ritsu about this.
However, whenever the two share a private moment at work, Takano often becomes flirtatious and romantic with Ritsu, even kissing him, much to his embarrassment due to the working environment.
He also has a habit of misusing his authority as Ritsu's boss as a means to spend time with Ritsu such as, in the manga, going on a brief vacation with him under the guise of a business trip. This is shown to annoy Ritsu since he is technically abusing his authority although, despite being aware, it's shown that Takano doesn't care.
On rare occasions Takano will find ways to subtly or not-so-subtly flirt with Ritsu when they're in front of people. Ritsu's engagement to An is shown to bother Takano despite Ritsu repeatedly telling him that the arrangement is not his personal choice and is something only his mother wanted. Hence, when Takano learns that the engagement between Ritsu and An is canceled, he is deeply relieved.
He then admits that he was afraid that Ritsu might actually be stolen away by An given her attractive appearance and how close she is to Ritsu.
Yokozawa and Takano are good friends and have been working together for a long time. They met each other in college where they briefly dated, which Takano describes as sleeping together a few times. Despite this, Takano has stated that he would rather stay as friends and nothing more, deeply valuing his friendship with Yokozawa.
Yokozawa helped Takano cope with his various personal troubles, including his heartbreak from Ritsu suddenly breaking up with him. Takano's pain caused Yokozawa to resent Ritsu, and to also have him cast total blame onto him for why Takano broke down. Yokozawa is the one who helped Takano get his current job at Marukawa when he faced several problems at his previous company.
