They may love to study, but their learning isn't just by rote or from books - they are also some of the most intuitive students at Hogwarts. They are driven by their logic and so can simply read situations or infer things through experiences and circumstances.
Luna, for instance, is very emotionally intuitive. She knows when Harry needs company, and she senses when he needs space. While Ravenclaws seem to have endless reserves of knowledge and wit, they can use this to their advantage in a bad way. Professor Lockhart is the best - or rather, worst - example of this. He has spent his entire career using magic to take advantage of other people, and thus, take credit for their knowledge.
He may not be clever or brave in the way everyone thinks he is, but he's not dumb when it comes to business and public image. Of course, some would argue that this is more of a Slytherin trait, but it can definitely be found in Ravenclaws, too, as their intelligence can lead to pride and ambition. One of Ravenclaws' biggest advantages is how quick they are on their feet. In a tight situation, they are likely to be the first to think their way out of it.
This could be very advantageous in a Wizarding Duel , especially since Ravenclaws know so many spells. Their love of knowledge also makes them more likely to be aware of the etymology of spellcasting, and able to create new spells or adapt them on the fly. People can always count on a Ravenclaw if they're pressed for time, but only if that Ravenclaw is willing to help.
Ravenclaws can come across as a bit stuck-up and full of themselves - because they often know just how smart they are! Of course, Ravenclaw isn't the only house that can be seen as arrogant, as both Gryffindors and Slytherins show this side of themselves as well - only the Hufflepuffs are known for being humble. However, Ravenclaws tend to be a bit more arrogant about their intelligence and logic. Others, like Luna, are less arrogant because they simply do not care how they compare to others.
One of the most well-known Ravenclaw traits is intelligence. While intelligence may seem pretty straight-forward, it's actually a whole spectrum. For example, Luna isn't the smartest when it comes to book smarts, but she is emotionally intelligent, curious, and unique. One of the things about Ravenclaws' intelligence is that they often care about learning for its own sake.
While people in other houses can also be really smart, they often use learning as a means to an end, while a Ravenclaw will take great joy in learning for the sake of it. Ravenclaws can be a bit fussy and nitpicky. They seem the most likely to care about aesthetics as well as doing things the right or "perfect" way. While other houses such as Slytherin and Gryffindor might be more willing to cut corners, Ravenclaws are more on the perfectionist side.
This can also connect to the tendency to be a bit stuck-up, or at least, perceived as such. They can often expect others to have the same high standards that they do. Ravenclaws are also known for being rather creative and ingenious.
Characters like Luna Lovegood are a good example of this. The intelligence of a Ravenclaw can manifest in many ways, and for some people in this house, creativity is a big part of how they see themselves and express themselves in the world.
They can have phenomenal leaps of creative thought, and put things together more quickly than others, because of how flexible their thinking is. One of the big flaws with the Harry Potter house system at Hogwarts is how it separates the students from each other.
While all of the houses can stick to their own and be a bit judgemental, Ravenclaws do so in a way that is a bit colder and removed. They tend to stick to themselves and be a bit distant from some of the dramas and issues that the rest of the school tends to have.
This can make them come across as cool and a bit uncaring. A perfect examples of this is when Harry and Ron are disguised as Crabbe and Goyle, and ask someone where the common room is.
They mistakenly ask a Ravenclaw, who 'sniffs' at them for even suggesting they are in the same house. As one might expect of their creative natures, Ravenclaws are also original and independent. This independence is the more positive side of their tendency to be aloof.
The Ravenclaw common room and dormitories are located in Ravenclaw Tower on the west side of the castle. Students enter through a door with an bronze eagle-shaped knocker. The knocker asks a question of anyone who knocks on it and opens the door when the question is answered correctly. If the riddle is especially difficult, large groups of students may congregate outside the door as they try to figure it out.
The common room is circular, with arched windows that provide incredible views of the Hogwarts grounds, and a domed ceiling painted with stars like the night sky. It has a white marble statue of founder Rowena Ravenclaw , and behind it lies the door leading to the dormitories.
The dormitories are in turrets off the main tower, where students can hear the wind whistling around the windows. The bedsheets on the four-poster beds are made of sky blue silk. Our emblem is the eagle, which soars where others cannot climb; our house colors are blue and bronze, and our common room is found at the top of Ravenclaw Tower, behind a door with an enchanted knocker. The arched windows set into the walls of our circular common room look down at the school grounds: the lake, the Forbidden Forest , the Quidditch pitch and the Herbology gardens.
No other house in the school has such stunning views. Our founder, Rowena Ravenclaw , prized learning above all else — and so do we. Unlike the other houses , who all have concealed entrances to their common rooms, we don't need one. The door to our common room lies at the top of a tall, winding staircase. It has no handle, but an enchanted bronze knocker in the shape of an eagle.
When you rap on the door, this knocker will ask you a question, and if you can answer it correctly, you are allowed in. This simple barrier has kept out everyone but Ravenclaws for nearly a thousand years. Ravenclaws learn quickly, and you'll soon enjoy the challenges the door sets. It's not unusual to find twenty people standing outside the common room door, all trying to work out the answer to the day's question together.
This is a great way to meet fellow Ravenclaws from other years, and to learn from them — although it is a bit annoying if you've forgotten your Quidditch robes and need to get in and out in a hurry. In fact, I'd advise you to triple-check your bag for everything you need before leaving Ravenclaw Tower.
But geniuses are often out of step with ordinary folk, and unlike some other houses we could mention, we think you've got the right to wear what you like, believe what you want, and say what you feel. His office door is always open to any Ravenclaw with a problem, and if you're in a real state he'll get out these delicious little cupcakes he keeps in a tin in his desk drawer and make them do a little dance for you.
In fact, it's worth pretending you're in a real state just to see them jive. Most of the greatest wizarding inventors and innovators were in our house, including Perpetua Fancourt, the inventor of the lunascope, Laverne de Montmorency, a great pioneer of love potions , and Ignatia Wildsmith, the inventor of Floo powder. Well, I did say we produce eccentrics. In fact, we are also the house that gave the wizarding world Uric the Oddball, who used a jellyfish for a hat. He's the punch line of a lot of wizarding jokes.
Oh yes, our house ghost is the Grey Lady. Our dormitories are in turrets off the main tower; our four-poster beds are covered in sky blue silk eiderdowns and the sound of the wind whistling around the windows is very relaxing.
