The roundabout has proven very effective as a junction, and the roundabouts and dual carriageways ensure that congestion in the town is not a major problem. The town is served by the M3 motorway, with the main junction being Junction 6. If you are traveling to or from the Winchester direction, Junction 7 will take you to the western side of the town via the A Basingstoke is also signposted from the M4, and can be reached from here and Reading via the A The ringroad encircles the town centre and the inner suburbs, and is linked to the major roads out.
It has a circumference of 6 miles counter-clockwise and 6. When entering the town, there are boards to show parking spaces. The largest car park is over Festival Place: be warned as it has a bit of a confusing layout, but you should be okay if you follow the signs. There are many car parks around the Top of Town if you can't find a place there. Alternatively, you can park in the Leisure Park and take a shuttle bus to Festival Place. The '60s planners only cared about roads, but railways have also played and important part in the towns history.
After all, the London and South Western Railway only chose their route to Southampton to go via Basingstoke as it could be a good place to build extra lines from to the West Country. Today, Basingstoke has a single train station and is served mostly by South West Trains who provide services to London Waterloo.
The station won an award as the Best Medium Station a couple of years ago. The buildings are Victorian, and the station is staffed throughout the day.
Basingstoke has very little fare dodgers - although only due to the ticket barriers. The fast services to London depart on Platform 3 sometimes Platform 4 , although after harvesting commuters from Southampton and Winchester they are likely to be crowded. Groups of travellers may prefer the slow train which departs on Platform 1 - you probably will get a seat, although they stop at up to 10 stations on the way one of which, Winchfield, is in a village of about people.

Basingstoke has a modern bus station adjacent to Festival Place. It is located outdoors although the stands are sheltered, and there is a bridge to the opposite side of the train station forecourt. The local bus routes include:.
The local radio channel is Kestral FM, who deal with local news and play music, mostly from the '80s, though some from recent times. At many shops and places you will see a copy of the free Basingstoke Observer - a local newspaper.

Brewing became important during the 18th and 19th centuries, and the oldest and most successful was May's Brewery, established by Thomas and William May in in Brook Street. In a rival company, sponsored by the Great Western Railway built a branch from Reading , and in a line was built to Salisbury. Two traders who opened their first shops within a year of each other in the town, went on to become household names nationally: Thomas Burberry in and Alfred Milward in Ordinary citizens were said to be shocked [20] by the emotive, evangelical tactics of the Salvation Army when they arrived in the town in , but the reaction from those employed by the breweries or within the beer trade quickly grew more openly hostile.
Violent clashes became a regular occurrence culminating on Sunday 27 March , when troops were called upon to break up the conflict after the Mayor had read the Riot Act. The riot and its causes led to questions in Parliament and a period of notoriety for the town.
In John Isaac Thornycroft began production of steam-powered lorries in the town and Thornycroft's quickly grew to become the town's largest employer. Basingstoke was among the towns and cities targeted during the Second World War, and suffered bomb damage including St Michael's Church.
After the war, it had a population of 25, As part of the London Overspill plan, Basingstoke was rapidly developed in the late s as an 'expanded town', along with places such as Harlow and Swindon. Basingstoke town centre was completely rebuilt.
At this time many buildings of historic interest were replaced by a large red brick shopping centre and concrete multi-storey car park. Many office blocks and large estates were built, including a ring road. The shopping centre, following money issues, was built in phases. The first phase was completed by the s and was later covered in the s, and was known as The Walks. The second phase was completed by the early s, and became The Malls.
The third phase was abandoned and the site was later used to build The Anvil concert hall. The town has not been considered kindly. In , Basingstoke was voted ninth in a humorous guide to the worst places to live in Britain. Later that year, the Basingstoke Gazette launched its "Basingstoke — A Place to be Proud of" campaign, aimed at changing people's perception of the town. The central part of the shopping centre was rebuilt in and reopened as Festival Place.
This has bought a dramatic improvement to shoppers' opinions of the town centre, but it is unclear if it has softened the town's overall image. Further work to improve the image of the town continues with the latest Central Basingstoke Vision project coordinated by the Borough Council. In the mid s, numerous reports described sightings of the Beast of Basingstoke, a big cat believed to be a lion or a puma, possibly two.
Local legend suggests the animal was shot and killed, although no official news sources document any capture or killing of the beast. During the severe snow storms of December , Basingstoke and the surrounding area was one of the worst hit regions in the UK, where an estimated motorists were forced to abandon their vehicles around the town and on the ring road during the evening rush hour of the 21st.
Festival Place , a new shopping centre, opened in autumn , adding a huge boost to the town centre, [29] transforming the former The Walks Shopping Centre and the New Market Square. The Malls area has declined since the opening of Festival Place and the closure of its Allders department store, though it is still home to several major retailers.
The leasehold was purchased in by the St Modwen development group in partnership with the Kuwait property investment company Salhia Real Estate, with provision for redevelopment [30]. There are also several locally run shops, as well as the post office, and the market place.
